What comes to your mind when you think about denim jackets?

Like me, do you think of Levi Strauss aka Levi’s—the father of denim? Is it men sitting on the side of a road in their trucks wearing full denim and chewing a straw? Movie stars? You probably didn’t picture a photo of my parents when they were young. That photo used to look so outdated and funny with the 80’s clothing—but today everything in it would be spot on trendy! I also picture myself in elementary school, middle school, high school, as well as TODAY wearing a denim jacket. One thing has changed since elementary school, my jacket today has way less flowers than it did almost 20 years ago. All in all, I think it’s fair to say that the denim jacket is a timeless piece.

Denim jackets have been available for over 100 years

Denim jackets have been available for women for 100 years and the trend doesn’t seem to be fading away any time soon. And I don’t see why it should! Denim is a practical fabric that lasts a long time. That’s why it was adapted to make clothing for sailors in Italy and workers in America over 100 years ago. Denim expanded out of the railway’s in the 50s when it was adapted by younger Americans—the cool (or rather notorious) kids created the trend to wear denim jackets everywhere. That was almost 70 years ago!!! Considering that today’s professional sailors wear orange overalls with reflectors, I somehow I cannot see myself putting those on and someone wearing them fashionably in 100 years.. Can you?! Well, maybe if you add a waist belt 😉

Why to have a denim jacket?

The denim jacket is a style creator. It’s not the most fashionable item in your wardrobe (and probably never will be because its history) it’s a trendy and ever green item. There is something badass to pull on the jacket that was favored by cowboys. It gives a relaxedness to your outfit. Even though denim jackets have kept their popularity over a century the styles of this iconic piece have varied and evolved.

My denim jacket(s)

This is my Finnish designed denim jacket worn often in a city of San Francisco where denim was born. I really admire the brand and if you haven’t yet heard of R/H Studio go and check them out. This jacket caught my eye right away because it is playful, practical (soft and light) and versatile.

The jacket has traveled to Grand Canyon

I like borrowing my hubby’s clothes – here’s his denim jacket that is better known as “our denim jacket”. The jacket is bought from San Francisco, Azalea. Azalea carries premium denim brand Agolde that is based in Los Angles.

What to consider when looking for a denim jacket?

When looking for a denim jacket I would recommend to stick with basics if you want it to last years. I prefer softer denim but admire the ladies who can pull off strong oversized denim jacket with an 80s twist and make it work. The true American look combined with minimalistic style – that is fierce and sexy! If you have/find a vintage denim jacket with one pocket, hold on to that jacket tight! Denim Jackets with only one pocket are the original jackets and much more worthy than a regular vintage denim jacket.

Last but definitely not least: making denim the way it is takes a lot of water. Before purchasing denim, always get to know the brand and learn more about their water footprint.

Remember: today to make denim jacket work, it needs space. I would rather wear oversized than too tight denim jacket.
